Minimally Invasive Surgery Q & A

What is a minimally invasive surgery?

A minimally invasive surgery is usually a laparoscopic procedure. Laparoscopic surgery is a progressive technique, which is conducted through a few small incisions and a camera mounted on the end of a thin tube. The doctor uses specially designed, long, narrow instruments, inserted into the body through thin tubes to complete the procedure, inside of the body. Generally, incisions are made around the navel. Patients heal much quicker and with reduced internal and external scarring following minimally invasive surgery. Laparoscopy is generally conducted under general anesthesia and carbon dioxide is used to expand the patient’s abdomen which allows the doctor to see the internal structures clearly.

What are the advantages of minimally invasive surgeries?

Minimally invasive surgery is just as effective but often safer than traditional open surgery. Another benefit is recovery and healing following a minimally invasive procedure are usually faster. Minimally invasive surgeries result in less scarring and patients usually experience less pain during recovery than they would following an open surgery.

What types of minimally invasive surgeries are available?

Dr. Greenidge offers tubal ligation for those women who have completed their families and want to avoid taking birth control. Myomectomy is a procedure that removes fibroids surgically from the uterus. She also performs laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomies, which uses a few small incisions placed in the abdomen. This procedure uses a small camera and tools that reduce the uterus into small pieces that are then removed through those incisions. Laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy is a variation the supracervical. The difference is that there is an additional incision in the vagina and the uterus is removed through the vaginal canal. Robotic-assisted hysterectomy is also a minimally invasive surgery used for partial and full hysterectomies. It is very similar to a laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy but with the use of computers and robotic instruments that help to reduce and remove the uterus.
